Climate on the Costa Brava: weather and best time to visit
On the Costa Brava, the Mediterranean climate makes more than a few people happy. With over 300 days of sunshine a year and temperatures ranging from 18 to 30°C depending on the season, this Catalan region enjoys weather conditions that remain pleasant all year round. Are you planning a tourist stay there? Or better yet: a real estate investment in Roses, Empuriabrava, or Lloret de Mar? Good news: the coast attracts a clientele captivated by its landscapes and Mediterranean climate all year long, and Immo Center, our real estate agency based in Empuriabrava, will support you in your property search.
The Mediterranean climate of the Costa Brava: an asset for investment
Located on the northeast coast of Spain, just below the border with France, the Costa Brava benefits from a temperate Mediterranean climate that distinguishes it from other coastal areas of the country. Its microclimate stems from its geographical position between the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the Pyrenees. With over 2,500 hours of annual sunshine, the sea close at hand, and a fascinating historical heritage to discover during long walks, it is a highly popular holiday destination.
The mountainous terrain of the Pyrenees creates a natural barrier against cold north winds, while the Mediterranean Sea regulates temperatures, bringing mildness in winter and coolness in summer. The characteristic local breezes pleasantly refresh the summer days: the gregal from the northeast, the xaloc from the southeast, and the migjorn, which comes from the south.
Precipitation is spread over 60 to 80 days a year, totaling 768 mm, concentrated mainly in autumn and spring. Compared to more southern Mediterranean coasts such as the Costa del Sol or the Costa Blanca, temperatures on the Costa Brava are slightly cooler in summer: the heat remains pleasant without becoming difficult to bear as in other regions. In short, the ideal weather for families.
Average temperatures and seasonal variations month by month on the Costa Brava
Our experience of the local real estate market since 1975 allows us to confidently state that the balanced climate of the Costa Brava is a strong argument for investors. Properties in Empuriabrava and Roses enjoy high rental demand during the summer, but also during the shoulder seasons thanks to mild weather. In spring and autumn, it is not uncommon to be able to enjoy the fine weather on the beach or in the Catalan towns. The tourist season therefore extends well beyond the months of July and August.
In winter, from January to February, temperatures range from 4°C to 15°C. The sky remains mostly clear, so the region’s brightness is appreciable despite the chill. In spring, between March and April, the mercury climbs to between 10°C and 18°C. Blooming is in full swing, and a few refreshing showers periodically water the landscapes.
In summer, the coast is enlivened by temperatures from 22°C to 30°C, between June and September. The Mediterranean Sea warms up to 23°C, ideal for swimming. Precipitation is rare in July, with only 29 mm of rain, for an average daily sunshine that reaches its peak during this period and promises up to 300 days of sunshine a year.
From October to November, the weather becomes more contrasted again. Temperatures drop back to 12°C – 19°C, accompanied by more sustained rainfall: between 93mm and 106mm per month. The relative humidity noticeably increases, creating a milder atmosphere than in summer.
When is the best time to visit the Costa Brava?
All year round, the Spanish coast enjoys a certain charm that it owes as much to its landscapes as to its Mediterranean climate. However, some periods stand out for a holiday, but also for an investment.
For swimming and seaside pleasures
The ideal period for swimming extends from mid-June to September, when the water reaches a temperature of 23°C. During the months of July and August, the sunshine is at its maximum and the sea is crystalline, the conditions are then perfect for enjoying the beaches of Empuriabrava and Roses at length. For a quieter experience while still enjoying pleasant water, favor the first half of September.
For outdoor activities and hiking
The months of March, April, and October are perfect for discovering the coastal paths and the hinterland without suffering from rain or intense heat. Temperatures of 10°C to 18°C in spring and 12-19°C in autumn are ideal for long walks without the summer heat. These months allow you to appreciate the Mediterranean bloom or autumn colors, while avoiding the tourist crowds.
For cultural discovery and authenticity
The Costa Brava can be visited all year round, but it is during the cooler seasons that it reveals its true identity. Between November and February, you will discover Empuriabrava and Roses in their daily life, far from the summer bustle. Temperatures remain mild but sunny days are numerous, and local life is in full swing in traditional markets and restaurants.
For family stays
June, July, and early September bring together the ideal conditions for family holidays: sun, warmth, and fully operational tourist infrastructure. The sea is warm from June, and establishments offer activities suitable for children. In early June or late August, you may be able to enjoy more advantageous rates to make the most of the good weather.
For tranquility out of season
Despite its obvious charms during the summer, the region is not devoid of interest in January, February, and November. Holidaymakers can take advantage of attractive rates and a peaceful atmosphere. These months perfectly suit visitors looking for calm, contemplation, and long walks along the sea. Family restaurants are open, and the welcome from the locals is sometimes even warmer than during the high season.
The best time to invest in a property on the Costa Brava
The best time to invest in a residence on the Spanish coast is closely correlated with the level of tourist footfall in towns like Empuriabrava and Roses.
Buy out of season and make a profit during the rental peak
From April to November, rental demand experiences its highest peak. It is during this period that owners can maximize the profitability of their property, notably thanks to occupancy rates that can reach 90% between June and September. Consequently, buying out of season is often the best opportunity. Between November and March, sellers are more inclined to negotiate. With rental demand being less strained, sellers are less solicited. For the buyer, it is also the time to take the time to visit several properties, compare neighborhoods, costs, and make a thoughtfully considered decision.

A favorable climate that stimulates rental demand
The Mediterranean climate of the Costa Brava often has a noticeable impact on the region’s real estate attractiveness. Empuriabrava and Roses position themselves as highly sought-after destinations all year round, both for purchasing second homes and for rental investment.
The mild climate naturally stretches the tourist season. While the summer months, from June to September, concentrate the majority of visitors to the region, the period from April to October also attracts a European clientele in search of sunshine without heatwaves. Winter, whether mild or harsh, seduces mainly those looking to flee the northern grayness. Owners can thus maximize their rental income, notably in towns like Roses, Empuriabrava, or Platja d’Aro.
At Immo Center, we have observed since 1975 how these climatic cycles influence buying and rental trends. The mild and sunny climate attracts retirees, expats, and international investors alike. Demand remains strong, especially for second homes and seaside properties, which supports rising prices.
